The former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has revealed his heart stopped beating three times while in rehab and that he also came close to committing suicide during his battle with depression and alcoholism.

Gascoigne says last year's rumours he had died were closer to the truth than many realised.

The former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers and Everton player says his heart failed a few times and medics revived him on each occasion.

He says tried to kill himself by taking sleeping pills, getting into a warm bath and having a few drinks.

Gascoinge says after he called his sister from the bathroom to tell her he loved her she called the police.
