Despite two centurions in their ranks the New Zealand cricketers have only been able to muster 279 in their first innings in the first test against India in Hamilton.
Teetering at 60 for six, skipper Daniel Vettori and Jesse Ryder put on 186 for the seventh wicket with Vettori bringing up his thrid test century in making 118, while Ryder scored his maiden test ton, being the last batsman out for 102.
There was doubt as to whether Ryder would get to three figures when number eleven Chris Martin came to the crease having to see out five balls from spinner Harbajan Singh.
He did and Ryder then pulled pace bowler Ishant Sharma to the boundary for four to bring up his century.
India skipper M.S. Dhoni won the toss and put New Zealand into bat and while the Seddon park wicket offered some early assistance to the bowlers the New Zealand batsmen were by and large responsible for their own demise.
At stumps India was 29 without loss.
