The New Zealand Cricket selection boss admits the batsmen need to perform better in the second test against India in Napier, starting on Thursday.

Jesse Ryder and captain Daniel Vettori both scored centuries in Hamilton but only three other players were able to pass 30 as the Black Caps scrambled to 279 all out in both innings, while India amassed 520.

Glenn Turner says with a such a young side, batting time is still an issue.

He says the likes of Daniel Flynn and Martin Guptill have the pedigrees to bat long innings and make big scores, it's just a matter of when.
