The American co-owner of the English Premier League football club Liverpool is reported to be considering the sale of his sporting assets which also include the National Hockey League team the Montreal Canadiens.

The French language Canadian newspaper La Presse says the Canadiens president Pierre Boivin told it Gilett has hired financial companies in Canada, Europe and the United States to look at all his properties, including Liverpool.

Boivin cited the economic crisis and what he said was the unwillingness of banks to finance even very good projects.

Gillett owns 80.1 percent of the Canadiens and 50 percent of Liverpool.

He and co-owner Tom Hicks have had a stormy relationship since taking control of the five-times European champions Liverpool for $558 million in February 2007.
