The American cycling legend Lance Armstrong says is participation in the Giro d'Italia is in doubt after he broke his collarbone in the first stage of the Tour of Castilla y Leon in central Spain

Armstrong says he's very disappointed about the crash 20 kilometres from the finish as he's never had such an injury.

He says it makes May's Italian tour very complicated and in the meantime he's returing to the United States.

Armstrong, a cancer survivor who went on to claim a record seven Tour de France crowns, ended a three-and-a-half year retirement at the Tour Down Under in Australia in January.

He declared his goal this year is to win an eighth Tour de France title in July.
