All Whites wilt after Bright start in Thailand

9:58 am on 29 March 2009

Thailand have beaten the All Whites 3 - 1 in a football friendly in sapping Bangkok temperatures.

New Zealand got the taste of Asian conditions they wanted ahead of the away leg of the FIFA World Cup play-off against a yet-to-be-determined Asian nation later in the year - but not the result.

The All Whites started strongly but a lack of recent match play for the majority of the squad eventually told in temperatures that hit 38 degrees during the day and remained in the mid thirties even after the early evening kick-off.

Striker Kris Bright opened the scoring after just eight minutes but but the lead lasted just four minutes and the rest of the night's points belonged to the home side.

It was 2 - 1 at half time and Thailand sealed the match in the 77th minute with a counter-attack.

The All Whites now play Thailand 'A' on Wednesday morning with much of that team drawn from the 23-man Thailand squad.
