Banished Queensland swimmer likely to quit

The Queensland swimmer Nick D'Arcy is expected to quit the sport after claims that the controversial butterflier was misled for more than a year about redeeming himself and returning to the national team.

After being dropped from the Australian Olympic team last year, D'Arcy was yesterday kicked off the national team for July's world championships for being convicted of recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.

His coach Brian Stehr says he wants to know how long Australian swimming authorities plan to punish the 21-year-old, and that missing out on the Olympics should have been punishment enough.

Just days ago Swimming Australia had paraded D'Arcy as a member of the world championship squad, knowing he'd already pleaded guilty to a serious assault charge.

It appears D'Arcy has no legal right to appeal his expulsion.
