Valerie Vili and Nick Willis head a strong team of nine athletes selected to represent New Zealand at the world track and field championships in Berlin in August - but the former world discus champion Beatrice Faumuina hasn't been named.

The Olympic shotput gold medallist Vili will be defending her world title, won in Osaka in 2007, while the Beijing 1500 metres bronze medallist Willis has been named for the 800 and 1500 metres.

Athletics New Zealand's high performance manager says Faumuina could still be considered if she meets the A standard by July 27.

Kevin Ankrom says in the last year Faumuina's thrown close to the 62-metre A standard, which is the entry point.

Adrian Blincoe will run in the 5000 metres, Kimberley Smith in the 5000 and 10,000, Monique Williams in 200 and 400 and James Dolphin in the 200.

The javelin thrower Stuart Farquhar, decathlete Brent Newdick and heptathlete Rebecca are also competing, with the marathon runners to be selected on May 25.
