Phoenix sign injury prone striker on two-year deal

The Wellington Phoenix have signed injury-prone Tranmere Rovers striker Chris Greenacre on a two-year deal to replace Shane Smeltz, who's moved to the the Gold Coast A league football club.

The 31-year-old Greenacre has been Tranmere's top scorer for three of the past four seasons but has struggled to get on the field this season for the League One club, which is two tiers below the English Premiership.

Greenacre's suffered back and foot injuries and when he has been available has found himself pushed down the pecking order.

His latest injury comeback after a three month layoff, ended prematurely earlier this month when he suffered a knee injury and is likely to be out for the rest of the season as Tranmere, who're currently sixth, push for promotion to the Championship.

Greenacre's previously played at Manchester City, Blackpool, Cardiff City, and Stoke City and is due to arrive in Wellington in early June.
