The New Zealand cyclist hayden Roulston has been forced out of this week's Giro d'Italia because of injury.

The Olympic silver medalist has had problems with an ankle following a fall.

Roulston says he's extremely disappointed to have to pull out of the second biggest tour in the world.

However he says the season is long and he's decided together with his Swiss Cervelo team that it is better not to take the risk of injuring it more.

Roulston says he's optimistic he'll come back stronger for his next race, the Tour of Cataluña.

Julian Dean is now the only New Zealander in the Giro, which starts in Venice on Saturday.
