Team New Zealand and the rest of the fleet have had frustrating opening day of competition in in the first round of sailing's MedCup competition at Alicante in Spain.

Just one of the three scheduled races was completed due to a lack of wind.

Team New Zealand was promoted from fourth to third in the completed race after Swiss boat Marazzi which crossed the line first was penalised for being over the crew weight and demoted to fourth.

Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker says practice races leading up to the competition have shown there'll be little between the twelve strong fleet and he was relatively satisfied with their first up effort.

Tomorrow's weather forecast is a stronger and less shifty breeze.
