The England cricketers have closed in on a series victory over the West Indies, taking complete control on the third day of the second test in Durham.

England declared their first innings on 569 for 6 and then paceman James Anderson dismissed Devon Smith, Chris Gayle and Lendl Simmons as the visitors limped to 94 for three in reply.

Ramnaresh Sarwan on 41 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 3 were the not out batsmen when bad light forced an early close of play.

The West Indies still need 276 runs to avoid the follow-on with two days remaining.

England lead the two-test series 1-0.
