New Zealand's womens water polo team has beaten Japan 10-9 in Adelaide in the first game of the Asia Pacific qualifying championship for a place in the 2009 World Super League.
The men's team lost to Japan 15-7.
The top two teams from the qualifying go through to the super league which will be played in Russia next month.
New Zealand play Australia next and then China.
A second round of games will be played in Auckland next weekend.
