The National Basketball Association commissioner David Stern has done an about face and slapped LeBron James with a $US25,000 fine for refusing to shake hands with rivals and snubbing reporters.

The NBA's 2009 Most Valuable Player left the building in a huff after the Cavaliers' 103-90 season-ending Eastern Conference final playoff loss to the Orlando Magic, James refusing to clasp hands with Orlando players.

Stern says says aftert initially deciding not to punish James the the more he thought about it, the more he realised there were two things he had to deal with: the media and the failure to congratulate Orlando.
