Elsom recalled to Australia squad despite knee injury

Rocky Elsom has been rushed back into the Australia rugby squad for next week's first Test against Italy despite concerns about a long-term knee injury.

Elsom has not played Test rugby for a year after leaving Australia to take up an offer to play club rugby in Ireland.

The combative flanker declared his availability last week when he signed a two-year deal with the Australian Rugby Union and coach Robbie Deans wasted no time recalling him for the domestic internationals ahead.

Elsom was picked to play for the Barbarians against Australia in Sydney on Saturday but pulled out because of a knee injury. The Wallabies won the match 55-7 and Elsom joined the Australians in camp on Sunday where he will undergo fitness tests.
