Sevens star Honey Hireme ran in five tries as the New Zealand women's rugby league team opened the defence of their World Cup title, with an 88-0 hiding of France at Dewsbury.

The Kiwi Ferns are bidding for an impressive fourth straight world crown and had six players on debut.

The side stayed on at the ground to watch the Australian and English women in their pool match - the Australians won that game 14-6.

The Kiwi Ferns face England next, at 7am on Tuesday.
