Atletico to sign Barca's David Villa

Atletico Madrid have reached a deal in principle to sign the Spanish football striker David Villa from Barcelona - but it's a deal that's going to cost the Catalan giants dearly.

Having signed for Barca in a $66 million move from Valencia in 2010, the 31-year-old, who struggled to hold down a regular first team place at the Camp Nou last season, will cost Atletico just $8.4 million.

Villa has struggled in the side since returning from a broken leg, and with Brazil star Neymar arriving, was unlikely to feature much in the starting XI.

Barcelona say they will retain the rights to 50 percent of any future transfer of the player.

Defender Eric Abidal is also leaving Barca, joining newly promoted Monaco on a one-year deal after his contract with the Spanish champions ended.
