Froome extends lead on stage 11 of Le Tour

The British rider Chris Froome has extended his overall lead on the Tour de France after finishing second on stage 11, a 33-kilometre time trial in Mont. St Michel in the north of France.

Froome leads by three minutes 25 seconds from the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, and a dual winner of the Tour, Alberto Contador, is fourth, just under four minutes down on the leader.

But the main talking point of the stage was an incident involving the British star Mark Cavendish who had urine thrown at him by a spectator.

Cavendish was blamed for a collision in the final sprint of Wednesday's stage that sent the Dutch rider Tom Veelers crashing to the ground.

The Isle of Man rider was cleared of any wrongdoing by race officials.
