British Open organisers have been accused by the world's top golfers of setting up a ridiculously difficult Muirfield course, which nature had made difficult enough after a spell of hot dry weather.
The American veteran Phil Mickelson called on officials to "let go of their ego", feeling some of the pin placements were unreasonable in the conditions, and the clubhouse leader Zach Johnson said he was shocked by some of the pin positions.
But they were among the lucky ones, as the conditions got even tougher for the afternoon players.
The R&A's chief executive Peter Dawson said the players' comments would be taken on board heading into the second round.
