Mickelson reflects on rollercoaster ride

Phil Mickelson has reflected on the emotional roller-coaster of the last few weeks after timing his run to perfection to scatter the field and win his first British Open - his fifth major golf title.

Under the radar most of the week, the 43-year-old American shot a brilliant five under par 66 at Muirfield to secure an emotional victory just over a month after finishing runner-up at the US Open for the sixth time.

Mickelson, who started the day at two over, had six birdies and just one bogey on his final round finishing three shots ahead of Sweden's Henrik Stenson.

He says it feels amazing to take his first Open home, after the heartbreak of losing the US Open yet again.

Mickelson's British Open triumph comes at his 20th attempt having earlier in his career struggled on links courses.

He will now try to complete his set of majors by finally ending his US Open jinx.
