The Queensland-based New Zealand swimmer Cara Baker has finished 23rd, just 19 seconds behind the winner in the women's 10km open water swim at the World Championships in Barcelona.

Baker, who finished in a share of fifth place in the five-kilometre race earlier in the week, was nestled in the front pack until the pace went on over the final 2.5-kilometre lap.

The Brazilian pair of Poliana Okimoto Cintra and Ana Marcela Cunha won gold and silver, after both medalled in the five-kilometre race.

Emma Robinson of Wellington was 34th.
