Greens under water at US Open

6:27 am on 19 June 2009

There's a significant weather delay on the first day of the US Open golf championship in New York virtually ensuring the first round will spill over into the second day.

After heavy rain in the leadup to the championship, the greens at Bethpage State Park have been under water, and only half the field have started their rounds.

No player has completed more than 11 holes, and four players have managed to get one under par.

Michael Campbell birdied his opening hole but he'd dropped back to one over par after 4 holes, alongside the hot favourite Tiger Woods, who's completed six holes.

The British Open champion Padraig Harrington is four over par after 6 holes, and the young English star Luke Donald is 5-over par after 5 holes.

Further showers and thunderstorms have been forecast on Long Island for the next four days.
