The Dunedin javelin thrower Rory McSweeney has finished in sixth place in his class at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon.

McSweeney, who has a below the knee amputation, threw a personal best distance of 49.95 metres.

Less than six metres covered the first seven athletes in the completion, with athletes from France, Cyprus and Iran taking the medals.

The performance in Lyon represented a big improvement for the Raylene Bates coached 28 year old from the last IPC World Championships in Christchurch two years ago, where McSweeney threw 42 metres.
