Hamilton's Steven Alker has charged into a share of the lead after the first round of the Boise Open in Idaho, the latest event on America's second tier golf tour.

A fortnight after winning the Utah Championship, Alker carded seven birdies and an eagle to sit atop the leaderboard at nine under par, alongside the American Hunter Haas.

Manawatu's Tim Wilkinson is just one shot back in third at eight under par.

Wilkinson was bogey free and stormed home with 29 on the back nine, including five straight birdies to finish.

Rotorua's Danny Lee signed for a two-under par 69 to be tied 74th and is in danger of missing the cut.

All three New Zealand golfers are well placed to qualify for the top flight PGA Tour next year.

The top 25 players on the Order of Merit at the end of the 2013 season automatically qualify for the PGA Tour and Wilkinson, Alker and Lee are all inside the mark.
