The Wallabies fullback Kurtley Beale has been ruled out for the year after being told by the new coach, Ewen McKenzie, to have an operation on his shoulder.
Beale, who has had a torrid year with several off-field problems, played in all three tests in the British and Irish Lions series but has been carrying the injury since last year.
McKenzie says the injury's having an impact on the game and he wants him to get it fixed to allow him to come back healthy next year.
Beale is almost certain to re-sign with the New South Wales Waratahs over the next month and draw a line under his troubled two years with the Melbourne Rebels.
