The New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle has won the bronze medal in the 400 freestyle on the opening night of finals at the Swimming World Championships in Barcelona.
25-year-old Boyle was fourth fastest in qualifying and went one better in the final to finish third behind the Olympic gold medallist Katie Ledecky of the United States and silver medallist Melanie Costa Schmid of Spain.
It is New Zealand's first medal at a world championship since Danyon Loader in 1994.
