9:16 am on 3 August 2013

The Australian swimming star James Magnussen has atoned in part for his loss at last year's Olympics by defending his 100 metres freestyle title at the world championships in Barcelona.

A year on from his heartbreaking defeat in the London Olympic final, Magnussen reasserted himself as the world's fastest man, coming from 5th at the turn with an undeniable finishing burst to edge out the American pair James Feigen and Nathan Adrian.

Adrian beat Magnussen in last year's Olympic final by one-hundredth of a second.

The American Ryan Lochte won a third consecutive world title in the 200 metres individual medley, only the second male after fellow American Michael Phelps to win a treble of 200 medley world titles.

The American women's sensation Missy Franklin won her fourth gold medal of the week, swimming the anchor leg of the 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay.
