NZ triathletes wilt in Washington

Andrea Hewitt was the best of the New Zealanders finishing sixth at the latest round of the ITU World Champs Triathlon Series in Washington while Bevan Docherty and Clark Ellice failed top finish the men's race.

Hewitt could do nothing to stop Australia's Emma Moffatt and Emma Snowsill finishing first and second while Debbie Tanner finished 11th and Rebecca Spence failed to finish on debut.

Great Britain's Alistair Brownlee made it two from two as he won from the Spaniard Javier Gomez and Germany's Michael Petzold.

Ellice was sick during the bike leg before pulling out of the race in the hot, humid conditions while Docherty made a tactical decision to save himself for the World Cup Des Moines next weekend.

Meanwhile Auckland's James Elvery has enjoyed a breakthrough performance in winning the ITU Pan American Cup race in Montreal, his first win at that level since starting six years ago.
