8:58 am on 7 August 2013

The Waikato brother and sister Oliver and Susannah Leydon-Davis have bowed out of their mixed doubles campaign at the Badminton World Championships in China.

The world number 52 ranked Leydon-Davises were defeated by the world number seven Thai pair, Sudket Prapakamo and Saralee Thoungthongkam, in straight sets in 26 minutes in the second round of competition.

Oliver Leydon-Davis then teamed up with Auckland's Kevin Dennerly-Minturn in the New Zealand men's doubles team, but they had no more luck, losing to the 20th ranked Germans Ingo Kindervater and Johannes Schoettler in the first round, also in straight sets, in 25 minutes.

The World Championships run until August the 11th in the 10,000 seat capacity TianHe Indoor Gymnasium, Guangzhou, with around 400 of the world best players entered in the event.

The remainder of the New Zealanders competing on day one were beaten by much higher ranked opponents including New Zealand's top singles player Joe Wu, who was beaten by the seventh seed from Vietnam.
