Darwin tragedy hits Aussie racing

5:34 am on 7 August 2013

Australian racing is reeling from the death in Darwin of the popular Northern Territory jockey Simone Montgomerie.

The 26-year-old mother of two, from a well-known racing family, fell from her mount about 100 metres from the winning post and was fatally injured by following horses.

20,000 racegoers from all parts of the country were on course for the Darwin Cup meeting, and the champion Sydney-based jockey Nash Rawiller said he'd never left a racecourse feeling so sad and numb.
