Upset win for Glover at US Open

6:34 am on 23 June 2009

The American outsider Lucas Glover is the new US Open golf champion after a two shot victory in the weather-delayed 109th championship at Bethpage in New York.

Glover held off late charges by fellow Americans Phil Mickelson and David Duval and the Englishman Ross Fisher to finish with a round of 73 for a 4-under par total, two strokes clear of the big-name pair, and the third round leader Ricky Barnes who came back into contention after dropping 7 shots in his first 12 holes before bouncing back.

Englishman Fisher was alone in 5th place and the defending champion Tiger Woods, who started the final round nine shots back, finished in a two-way tie for 6th.

It's only the second PGA tour title for Glover, a 29 year old from South Carolina who had to pre-qualify for the tournament.
