Isner upset nadir for US game

An unknown Canadian tennis player has made a bit of history by knocking out US star John Isner in the first round of the Toronto Masters.

Vasek Pospisil's three-set victory means Isner's ranking will slip below his current 20th ATP ranking, so there won't be an American in the top 20 for the first time ever.

Pospisil's ranked 71st in the world and the wildcard moves on to face the Czech Radek Stepanek, who eliminated 12th seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, also in three sets.

World number four Rafael Nadal slipped quietly back into competition with an opening doubles triumph in the Spaniard's first competitive match since his shock first round exit at Wimbledon.

Nadal and partner Pablo Andujar saved two match points before they beat their Spanish compatriots David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez in a super tiebreak.
