Australia on top after day one

7:49 am on 10 August 2013

England won the toss and elected to bat against Australia on the first day of the fourth Ashes cricket test in Durham - but it hasn't paid off.

At stumps the hosts are 238 for nine, with only captain Alastair Cook making a half century while Jonathan Trott made 49.

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon took four wickets for 42 to be the pick of the Australian bowlers.

Tasmanian quick Jackson Bird was brought back into their side, with Mitchell Starc dropped for the second time this series.

England lead the series 2-0 and have retained the Ashes.
