Fed Express back on track

Roger Federer's made a winning return from injury, the Swiss tennis great beating Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets at the Cincinnati Masters.

Federer, who sat out the recent Rogers Cup as a precaution ahead of the upcoming US Open major, beat Kohlschreiber for the seventh straight time, 6-3 7-6 in their second round clash.

Federer, the defending and five-time champion, faces a real test at the tournament with Rogers Cup winner Rafael Nadal a potential quarter-final opponent, and Wimbledon, while US Open champion Andy Murray stands in the way of a possible final against world number one Novak Djokovic.

Rogers Cup finalist and new top-10 player Milos Raonic was joined in the second round by fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil, who continued his giant-killing ways from the Toronto tournament with the scalp of 15th-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon, who retired while trailing by a set early in the second.

On the women's side, Russian third seed Maria Sharapova was knocked out by young American Sloane Stephens in three sets, Stephens prevailing 2-6 7-6 6-3.

Also through are third seeded Spaniard David Ferrer, women's second seed Victoria Azarenka, another Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka, and American John Isner.
