Lydia Ko has made a dream start to the defence of her Canadian Golf Open title on the LPGA tour.

The 16 year old New Zealand amateur sensation, one of the early starters, is fired a five under par 65 at the Royal Mayfair course in Edmonton Alberta, to share the first round lead with the American Angela Sandford.

Ko tore through the front nine with four birdies, before adding a fifth on the par-four 10th.

She grabbed the outright lead briefly with another birdie at 14, but gave it back on the next hole with her only bogey of the day.
