Lydia Ko has climbed to the highest world ranking ever held by a New Zealand golfer following yesterday's win at the Canadian Open.

The 16-year-old from the Gulf Harbour Country Club has jumped 12 places on the official world rankings to number seven.

It's the highest ranking held by a New Zealander since the rankings were introduced, the women's rankings began in 2006 and the men's ranking has been in place since 1986.

Michael Campbell had been the highest ranked New Zealander.

In 2005, when Campbell won the U.S. Open and the World Match Play Championship he reached a career-high ranking of number twelve.

Ko's next tournament is the Evian Masters in France where she'll seek to become the youngest major champion in golf.
