The young Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic has come through an epic five-set opening match at the US Open and he's well placed to make at least the third round in New York.

Tomic fought back to win the five-setter first up against the Spaniard Albert Ramos in just under four hours.

The 20-year-old Queenslander left the court to discover that his expected second round opponent, the 11th seeded Japanese Kei Nishikori, had been upset in straight sets by the British qualifier Daniel Evans.
