New Zealand powerlifter Brett Gibbs has won a silver medal at the IPF World Junior Championships in Texas, with a combined lift of 830 kilos.

Competitive powerlifting consists of athletes taking three attempts to do a squat, bench press and dead lift.

The biggest lifts from each are added together and whoever has the highest total wins.

The 22-year-old Masterton man finished less than 20 kilos behind winner Roman Martynenko of Ukraine in the under 83-kilo category but with three New Zealand records was pleased with his performance.
