The New Zealand mountain biker Sam Blenkinsop has finished 4th in the downhill at the World Championships in South Africa.

Blenkinsop finished 0.4s off the podium.

The Wanganui competitor, who rides for Lapierre International, is the only New Zealand elite male mountain biker to podium at the world championships when he placed third in France in 2011.

Blenkinsop says from the start he was aiming at the top five so the weekend went well for him.

He says he was strong and had the physicals for this course... he just wishes it had got him on to the podium.
