Auckland will host the inaugural National Rugby League Nines tournament for five years starting in February.
The two-day event at Eden Park will involve all 16 NRL clubs, who will be required to have at least one top five player from their salary cap.
The teams will play for $2.5 million in prize money.
A Rugby League World Sevens tournament was played in Sydney prior to the NRL season, but ceased in 2004.
