Ronaldo gets spectacular welcome from Real faithful

The new Real Madrid football winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been welcomed by 80,000 jubilant fans at the Bernabeu in Madrid.

The club hopes the record $200 million signing will help restore them to former glories, and the extra crowd numbers after 50,000 turned out for the presentation of Brazilian playmaker Kaka last week show just how much the faithful want him.

Ronaldo, the World Player of the Year, emerged clad in Real's all-white strip and his new number nine shirt to a rapturous reception and was welcomed on stage by club legend Alfredo di Stefano, compatriot Eusebio and club president Florentino Perez.

Ronaldo says he's now fulfilled a "childhood dream" of joining Real.
