New Zealand horseman are leading contenders for the prestigous Burghley Horse Trial in England, with world number one Andrew Nicholson the defending champion, while Jock Paget and Sir Mark Todd are also taking part.

The $120,000 first prize has attracted all the best three-day event riders from around the world and Nicholson says his main threat is fellow New Zealander Paget, who's very talented and very competitive with two very good horses.

Nicholson will ride three horses at Burghley including last year's winner Avebury and his Olympic mount Nereo.

Paget won Badminton and the British Open this year.
