Sam Meech wins youth sailing title

The young Auckland sailor Sam Meech has won the boys Laser Radial title at the World Youth Championship.

Meech scored two wins and a second today to gain an insurmountable margin over the rest of the fleet with a day to sail.

Meech, from Mt Maunganui, won bronze at last year's world championships.

Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich-Bacher also had 2 wins and a second today to move up to 5th in the girls 420.

Rachel Basevi is 8th in the girls Laser Radial, Ben Goodwin and Logan Dunning-Beck are 9th in the boys 420, Marcus Hansen and James Turner are 8th in the hobie cat and windsurfers Ben Mackay and Lucy Driver are lying 10th and 9th in their respective fleets.

New Zealand is lying 5th in the race for the prestigious Volvo Trophy awarded for overall best team performance at this event. France leads from Great Britain, with Italy and Brazil also out in front of New Zealand.
