No big upsets on day one of the opening round proper of European football's elite Champions League, with wins to the two Manchester giants United and City, Real Madrid, and last season's winners Bayern Munich.

The German treble winners easily beat Russians CSKA Moscow 3-0 in Munich, while Danish club Copenhagen did post a shock result, with a 1-1 home draw against Italian champions Juventus.

Standout performances were Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick as Madrid thrashed Galatasaray 6-1 in Turkey, while Ronaldo's old United team-mate Wayne Rooney scored a brace at Old Traffod, the English champs repelling Bayer Leverkusen 4-2.

Manchester City won 3-0 at Czech side Viktoria Plzen.

But the fourth-placed Spanish side, Real Sociedad, showed the top European level could be beyond them, the debutants losing 2-0 at home to perennial Ukrainian qualifiers Shakhtar Donetsk.

Big-spending French champions Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Greek visitors Olympiacos 4-1, while Portugese runners-up Benfica won 2-nil at home over Belgian side FC Anderlecht.

The top two teams in each four-team group qualify for the knockout stages.
