Southland has jumped from last to third in provincial rugby's Championship following its 33-25 win over Bay of Plenty in Tauranga on Wednesday.
The Stags came from behind in the second half to claim just just their second win from six games this season thanks to tries from Elliot Dixon and Marty Mckenzie.
Earlier, a perfect kicking display by the Steamers captain Willy Ripia and a try just before the break by Kimami Sitauti gave Bay of Plenty the half time lead 19-13.
