Keep calm, Piri's back

5:45 am on 20 September 2013

The Blues halfback Piri Weepu has been called into the All Blacks squad to travel to Argentina and South Africa after TJ Perenara suffered an injury.

Perenara suffered a stress fracture in his leg and is expected to be out of rugby for up to six weeks.

Weepu last played for the All Blacks in the June series against France.

Coach Steve Hansen says they've selected Weepu for two reasons: one, given the environments they're going into, it would be unfair to bring in a novice halfback; and secondly, they've also seen advances in his game in the areas they've asked him to improve in.

First five-eighth Tom Taylor has been confirmed as the injury replacement for Dan Carter, while All Blacks Captain Richie McCaw, who is recovering from a knee injury, will also travel with the squad.

A decision on whether or not McCaw is available to play against South Africa will be made later in the week in Argentina.

If he's not available, then Matt Todd will join the squad in South Africa.
