Football Ferns take out Valais Cup

8:34 am on 28 September 2013

The New Zealand women's football team has won the Valais Cup in Switzerland, after beating China 4-0 in the final.

It's the first tournament outside of Oceania that the Football Ferns have won since the Asian Cup in 1975.

All of the goals were scored in the second half by Hannah Wilkinson, Rosy White and two by Amber Hearn who was named the player of the tournament.

On Monday, the Football Ferns beat Brazil 1-0 in the quadrangular event to reach this morning's final.

The coach Tony Readings says his players were ruthless in their 4-0 rout of China.

Readings says winning the cup will give the Football Ferns confidence for next month's friendlies against world number ones the USA.
