The German cyclist Tony Martin has added a third world time trial title after crushing his rivals including Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins at the world championships in Italy.

Martin finished 46 seconds ahead of Wiggins over the 58-kilometre course.

Switzerland's former champion Fabian Cancellara was third.

Martin averaged 53 kilometres an hour over the course and that performance would have earned him sixth place in the team time trial.

Jesse Sergent was the best of the New Zealanders in 21st place.
