The New Zealand rider Linda Villumsen has finished sixth in the road race at the road cycling world championships in Italy.

Despite suffering from a heavy cold and sore throat, the 28-year-old from Auckland backed up from her silver medal in the time trial to complete her most successful world championship campaign.

Her sixth placing bettered her previous best of seventh last year.

The 140-kilometre race was won by defending champion Marianne Vos of the Netherlands.
