Cyclist Rui Costa has become the first Portuguese to win the road race at a world championship.

Costa came through a day of carnage in Florence caused by bad weather to upset the favourites, beating the Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez in a sprint finish.

Only 61 riders of the 208 on the start list finished the race.

The New Zealand trio Sam Bewley, Jack Bauer and George Bennett were among the many who failed to complete the 272-kilometre course.
